Basically, a
CSA is a community of individuals who pledge support to a farm operation so that the farmland becomes, either legally or spiritually, the community’s farm, with the growers and consumers providing mutual support and sharing the risks and benefits of food production. Members or shareholders of the farm pledge in advance to cover a portion of the anticipated costs of the farm operation and the farmer’s salary. In return, they receive shares in the farm’s bounty throughout the growing season, as well as satisfaction gained from reconnecting to the land.

Members also share in risks, including poor harvest due to unfavorable weather or pests. — USDA definition

Common Questions:

Q. When does the season begin?
A.  The season is 20 weeks and begins the third week of May and continues for 20 weeks.

Q.  When is payment due?
A.  Payment is due when share is purchased.  2010 Shares go on sale November 1, 2009 and are available until sold out, which is generally in late March.

Q. How big is a share?
A: The share size varies from week to week. Generally speaking, you will recieve enough vegetables for a family of four.  Especially in the very beginning and sometimes at the end of the growing season shares are smaller and in the middle you will be flash steaming and freezing and canning and jarring, or just sharing with neighbors because the shares become so abundant.

Q. What does a typical share look like?
A. Here's an example of a weekly share in July of 2008:
8 Large Tomatoes
1 Pint Cherry Tomatoes
4 Lg Squash
2 Lg Cucumbers
2 Heads Cabbage
3 Bunches of Radishes

Q. How do we get our vegetables?
A. You may pick up your produce at Homestead Farm, Millington, MD, but we also provide additional pick-up locations so you can choose the most convenient place to receive your vegetables.
