Ahhh, what a beautiful morning rain!  We certainly needed some moisture.  Irrigation has been keeping everything alive, but nothing is as right as rain.  Harvest for tomorrow’s CSA pick up will be a muddy mess and chances are your greens will be gritty, even with the wash they’ll get here.

Fall broccoli and cauliflower plants are beautiful.  No heads starting to form yet, but the plants are very healthy and strong.  We are really battling the groundhog, who has eaten a large portion of the cauliflower.  We have tried a Hav-a-hart trap with melon, which is reported to be their favorite food.  The landowner from whom we rent the farm has tried lead to the brain, but he has yet to find aim.  Our Australian Shepherd farm dog, Milo, is not at all violently minded with the vermin.  I’ve been thinking of how to interview a farm dog from the SPCA to dispense of the ground hog, but I’m not so sure the question “will she dispense with ground hogs?” will get us very high on the adoption list of the SPCA.  We’ve had a ground hog in the field before, and have always ignored it, as the damage was not too great.  This family has grown over the years with the healthful veggie diet!

Event:  Below is also our invite to the Maryland Food Bank event being held at our farm.  Please, if you would like to join us, RSVP to JC, who’s email is listed below.
