Different growing seasons

As I was browsing photos today, looking for something I took last week, I came across photos in a random folder from 2012.  AMAZING!!  It's absolutely amazing the difference in the growing season.  This season started normally in January and February, when we were starting seedlings in the greenhouses. April was warm and dry and we got a lot of the cool season crops in the ground like kale, cabbage and potatoes.  Then came May!  This has been the coldest, wettest May we have had in our 13 years on the farm.

Here are some comparison photos from 2012,  a relatively normal growing season for vegetables:

Weed control and cover crop

Weed control and cover crop

In between planting and harvesting crops, we spend a tremendous amount of time combatting weeds.  The first step in the war on weeds is to plant our crops in white or black plastic.  White plastic (reflective) is for crops liking cool weather.  Black plastic (absorbing) is for heat loving crops.

Spring is here! So happy to be in the fields

The weather and growing conditions have been perfect for a good spring start to the 2016 season.  Kale and cabbage are in the fields and have weathered the below freezing nights with success.  The kale got a bit frosted, but is quickly regrowing.  A resident ground hog approves of the taste!
