Farm News

Here on the farm, we’re seeding fall kohlrabi, rutabaga, turnips, radishes, lots and lots of head lettuce, and other greens.  Broccoli, cauliflower, brussels sprouts were all seeded weeks ago and are big transplants, ready for the field.  Our goal is to get them in the field this Saturday.  Watermelons, cantaloupe and canary melons are almost ready.  We anticipate watermelons by the end of this week and cantaloupes next week.  Canary melons are a little longer and will be ready the end next week.  We have a LOT of cantaloupes.  We space out the plantings so they don’t all ripen at once, but with our extremely cold, wet spring, the first planting sat and sat in the field and didn’t grow.  Then, when we got the second planting in the field, the sun came out and everything grew at once.  The exact scenario we tried to avoid (staggered planting for a staggered harvest) is hitting us in the face!  It’s a bummer, but Mother Nature is a fickle force!

This time of year the farm is horribly ugly with the spring crops gone to seed and the weeds overtaking their rows.  The messiness of the farm fields, coupled with the heat make it feel like you’re slogging through everything.  BUT, this week is mowing, disking, and getting ready to seed and transplant fall crops in the fields.  This means we’ll mow the field edges, disk in old crops, plant cover crops (ryegrass, daikon radish and crimson clover) and the fall crops.  All will be well with the world of weeds in about 10 days!
